Church address: 2nd & Morris Services: Sunday Morning Worship 10:30 am Sunday Evening 5 pm Telephone: (806) 455-1286 Pastor: Minister Delos Johnson The Quitaque Church of Christ had its beginning in September, 1940, when the elders of the congregation in Amarillo and Turkey sent Bro. H. Norman Gipson to conduct a missionary meeting here that resulted in eight persons being baptized. Under the leadership of Brethren Joe Woodruff, J.R. Lusk, Sr., and Dick Hooks, the church began to meet in the school until a building could be constructed. With the help of the Turkey congregation and volunteer labor, the first building was erected on the present location. In the spring of 1946, the Gasoline congregation was consolidated with the Quitaque to work and worship together to better serve the Lord. Brethren W. J. Carter and Ralph Carter were among the leaders from Gasoline. In the late 1940's and early 1950's, H. Norman Gipson, Marshall Davis, Buster Mullin and W.J. Leach worked with the congregation. The congregation grew in spirit and in number. From the late 1950's until 1975, many brethren held regular monthly preaching appointments. Many of those who came were from the West Amarillo Bible Training Work. Also, Bro. Earl Cantwell and Bro. J.D. Nance of Rock Creek preached regularly for the congregation. In 1968 the old building was enlarged and remodeled. Dressing rooms and a baptistery were built on with central air conditioning installed. The outside of the building was bricked. In April, 1975, Bro. Elgin Conner and his family moved to Quitaque to work and worship with the congregation. Elders were ordained on November, 1977. Bible study programs have been implemented that have resulted in spiritual growth. A building fund was begun in the late 1970's that resulted in a building program being implemented in the mid 1980's. A large addition for a foyer and fellowship hall with new restrooms and a kitchen were built. This has proven to be a great asset to the members as a place to visit and have monthly fellowship meals together, as well as a place for special events and family reunions that involve our members. Minister Delos Johnson is our present Pastor who came to us in the 1990's. |
